Hi
I recently bought laptop with Windows 2000 instaled on it .Have so
much trouble with te system . Gives me "svchost error" and I cant open
sites or do basic work .I did some research about this error message
and found that this bug afect only Win2000, Win XP ,but not Win98, and
almost every other computer with Win2000 has it.
SO MUCH TROUBLE FIXING THE PROBLEM, and not every sucseed. What I
should do ?. Keep fighting with the virus, or erase the hard disc and
load Windows 98 .Which one has best performance
;Windows 98 with 128Mb RAM or
:Windows 2000 with 128 RAM
I am homeuser and do basic WORD an EXEL and surf the Internet. No
games or movies. Thanks in advance for the advice.Sorry for the
misspelled words

I'm on a 450mhz and with just 160 RAM and Windows 2000 Pro has never given
me the slightest headache. Try updating your system with Service Pack 4.
Might not work for you but worth a try though. The way I look at it, you
should be fine running Win2k on your machine. Good luck.

You are much better off with W2k than a DOS-based system like W98, for a
variety of reasons. I'll bet your real problem is that you don't have
either a good antivirus program or firewall. Both are important for
anyone surfing the net. Without them you can look forward to future and
repeated instances of system crippling no matter what the system.

Once you have both these software packages in hand that would probably
be the right time to either get completely rid of that virus using one
of the tools available at antivirus websites like symantec or f-secure,
or simply reinstall W2k from scratch (if a W2k CD came with the
machine.) If the latter, and you only have one partition for everything
including system and applications and data, you will have an interesting
time figuring out how to back up your data before formatting that
partition for a clean install. Always a good idea to sequester all data
on a partition other than the system's, for just this reason.

If it matters, I'm very satisfied with the freebie "tiny firewall" from
tiny.com and the excellent F-secure antivirus suite. Both are trivial to
install and use, and very effective.
