What is best way to transfer all info to new HD

What is the best way to transfer all info from a smaller HD on my laptop to
a bigger HD. So far, I took out my old HD, put in the new one and installed
my OS MS Win XP Pro. Now I'm wondering how to proceed. How do I transfer
all information to my new HD. I have a new Maxtor 1 button external HD. Of
course I backed up all info from the old HD. I once watched how one of our
vendors at work, restored an image back onto a crashed computer. Isn't there
something like that I can do as well. Make an image of what I have on my old
computer, and then transfer it back to my new HD? I do have the new Norton
Ghost program, just in case I need it. Thanks in advance for any help I can
get.........Peter

I'm not certain exactly what you are wanting to do as it looks like you have
already replaced the old drive with the new drive and have already installed
the OS onto the new drive. It looks like prior to doing this you made a
backup of the important data from the old drive onto an external hard drive.
That being so you need to connect the external drive and simply copy that
data to the new drive.

However if what you really wanted to do was clone the contents of the old
drive onto the new drive then you will need to put the old drive back into
the laptop and create an image of it onto the external drive. You can use
Ghost to create an image of your old drive and dump it to your external
drive as an image file. Then remove the old drive, replace the new drive and
load the image to it from the external drive. Check the documentation that
came with Ghost or consult the Symantec website. You can retain the image
for future use if you desire or create a new image periodically that you can
reload if necessary.
