Best way to (image?) transfer my 40GB HD to 80GB HD?

Have a new 80GB HD. Would like to create an image of my 40GB HD and
transfer it.
My Dell laptop has a firewire connection to which I attach a outboard HD.
My plans are to create an image on the of my 40GB on the outboard HD. All
seams to break down as I do not know how to retrieve that image from the
outboard HD and apply it to my new 80GB HD in my laptop.

I do have Symantec Ghost but I do not think that the DOS interface will
handle the configuration of the firewire connection to the outboard HD. In
addition, I believe that there are limits in Ghost file sizes.

Any help or thoughts are greatly appreciated!

What version of Ghost? 2003 and above should work fine. Create a Ghost boot
CD. Make sure your laptop can boot from this CD and see the firewire drive.
Create an image on the firewire drive. Note: there may be more than one
partition on the laptop drive. Most Dell's have a hidden partition with
diagnostics and/or recovery information. Make sure you image the whole
drive. Install the new drive. Boot from the Ghost CD and restore the image
to the new drive. Keep the hidden partition the same size. Expand the other
partition to use the rest of the new drive.
