Primary HD Running Out of Space - Clone??

S

Sam

A friend of mine has a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro.
The primary HD (C:) is 40GB in size. He is just about out of space on this
HD. We were able to delete some items and move some data, but one program I
believe, has to keep its data on the primary HD. He asked me for my opinion
and I suggested that he purchase a new HD (Seagate 160 GB in size) and use a
Clone Program to make the transfer. I have used image programs for years
but never a clone program, other than reading about them. My thought would
be to make the transfer to the new HD with the clone program and then
install a good image program like the Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery
Program or the ShadowProtect Desktop Program.

Any suggestions as to recommended clone programs and were I could read about
cloning (web sites) would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Sam.

just add the new
harddrive as a slave
and move all the
non-system files
onto it.

you can even right
click on "my documents"
and change it to the
new drive.

Be careful when providing such lists. MOST of the programs on those
lists are CRAP and don't help the folks you are replying to.

Seagate supply a clone utility on their site - just ensure you follow the
instructions ie shutdown on completion, remove origonal hd and set new as
master, *before* rebooting

And I thought this was a Windows XP newsgroup, not a name calling newsgroup.

That's what I get for trying to be helpful, unlike your response.
