what is an open dialog box

Sometimes when I create an email and hit send, I get the message that I need
to close an open dialog box first.

What does this mean? Why does it come up? How do I fix it so I can send
the email?

I think once I got around the problem by saving it as a draft--though I am
not sure how to do that. I obviously am a novice with Outlook, generally
being an AOL user.

An "open dialog box" means, for example, you have clicked on "Tools" and
then "Options" to look at or change an option setting in Outlook. Outlook
wants to have that box (or window) closed before it will do anything else.
I'm not saying that is exactly what is happening in your case...that is just
an example of an open dialog box.

But if you are certain no such window or box is open at the time of the
error message, then you have a problem. Post back and someone will help you
further.

Version of outlook and how are you opening the message form? i.e., is this
only happening when you use the file, send to menu from another program or
does it happen when you hit the new message button in outlook?

Many dialogs within outlook are "modal" - you need to respond to the before
you can do anything else. Sometimes you'll get this error if outlook pops up
a dialog behind a window. I haven't seen this happen in in the last couple
of versions though.
