What is an iso file and how do I get it to work?

Everytime I create a CD using Nero Express, it asks me if
I want to save a copy as an iso file on my HDD. What is
this and do i get it to work?

Iso file contain image of CD that you can use for multiplication of same
data over more than one CD.

This question is not for this NG. Windows XP Embedded has nothing to do with
third-party CD burning software.
