what is a default asp page for in Frontpage?

Ref: a website designed in Frontpage 2003 by another designer.
Last year using Frontpage 2000 I did some simple text only maintenance on my
hard disk.
The designer retires. I get Frontpage 2003 and a new PC. Make a simple text
change to the front page using Frontpage extensions direct to the remote site.
Only later do I realise I've changed a 'new' file called default.asp NOT the
index.
I'm now required to make menu changes (side panel).
The client has had access to the site for text changes since the beginning.
How has the asp file come about and what do I need to do about it? The asp
file and the index seem identical and both show a client-made change.

Check w/ your host for the top level default home page file name and use it for your home page
- When you publish FP renames your home page file to that set by your host
(sounds like the host has changed it to default.asp)

The MS web server, IIS, uses default.asp as its primary default filename.
Other servers, such as Apache, would use index.html. Each server keeps a
hierarchical list of acceptable filenames for the default file. For example,
they might be default.asp, default.htm, index.htm. Even if your default file
is named index.htm, it's further down the list than the others. FP renames
it on publishing so that it is the same as the topmost on the list. If it
didn't, any file that was created with a name higher on the list would
over-ride your index.htm page.

It's always best to determine which default filename a host uses and rename
your default filename to that so there are not any conflicts.
