What Internet Connection Information is Needed During Initail Install of Vista?

S

Sam

I will soon be getting a new Dell computer with Vista Business. I am trying
to collect information that may be needed for the initial install of Vista
on the new computer. I currently have a DSL internet connection using the
2Wire 1000HW router. According to AT&T, I will not have to make any changes
to the router for the new computer. However, I am wondering about the
network connection setup for the new computer. Will I be asked for input of
internet network information during the initial Vista install, and if so,
what type of information do I need?

Thanks for any help, Sam.

Asked and answered *in detail* in the other newsgroup to which you posted.
Please don't multipost; it makes more work for everyone and will get you
*less* help, not more. See this for why:

Apologies for thinking you had multiposted this. I read the first sentence
which was identical to the other post you had made (which I answered) and
assumed you had multiposted. Completely my fault for not being more
thorough.

As Mike said, it will just connect if you are connecting wired (ethernet).
You'll just put the ethernet cable into your computer and attach it to one
of the free ports on the back of your AT&T modem/router. If you are joining
the new machine to your network wirelessly, you'll need to know your
wireless network encryption level and key. If you want to share network
resources with other computers, you'll need to set up file/printer sharing.

Without knowing exactly what your setup is, I won't give you all the details
of wireless connection and file sharing unless you need them. Just let me
know.

Again, please accept my apologies for my not being thorough enough with your
first post. I had already had two cups of tea so sleepiness is no excuse at
all. I am sorry.

Mike and Malke, thanks very much for your replies and information. My
computer/router connection will be wired only. Nice to know that Vista will
pickup the router/internet and make the necessary connection settings.

Malke, no need for apology as you all provide a tremendous amount of help
for individuals on these newsgroups. As my old boss use to say, the only
people who never make an error - are those who either lie like h---, or
don't ever do anything worthwhile.

Thanks again, Sam.

You're a real sweetie, Sam. Thanks for the kind words and for forgiving me
so graciously.

Post back if you have any questions once you get the new machine and I
promise to read your posts thoroughly!

If the computer is coming with Vista pre-installed, why are you
concerned about the initial installation? Doesn't make sense, as phrased.

I currently have a DSL internet connection using the
2Wire 1000HW router. According to AT&T, I will not have to make any changes
to the router for the new computer.

That's likely true, unless you were wise enough to change the router
from the default factory settings as a security precaution. Even then,
it should be transparent to the new computer, if configured properly.

However, I am wondering about the
network connection setup for the new computer. Will I be asked for input of
internet network information during the initial Vista install,....

Once again, Vista is already installed, so this question makes no
sense. Just plug it in, turn it on, and follow the on-screen prompts.

.... and if so,
what type of information do I need?

If you're planning on networking the new computer with your current
computer, you'll need the workgroup name and the username/password of
the account with which you'll be accessing the other computer.

I'm glad I saw this post as I'm waiting for a new machine to arrive that
will have Vista Home Premium installed. At the moment I'm using XP Home and
I'm wired to my wireless router and the other machines connect via wireless.
I intend to continue with the wired connection on the new machine and this
one will have a wireless card fitted to connect so it's good to know that
hopefully, and I say that with tongue in cheek, the new machine will just
connect.
I'm busy reading as much as I can about Vista while waiting for my machine
to arrive <g>
