Help needed: Vista hangs during installation

Dear all,
Help needed: I recently bought a new desktop computer (SP2, Intel Core
Duo 2.33GHz 2GbRAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 512 Mb, HD Maxtor stm
3160215AS 120Gb, Sata Gate) with a pirated Windows XP and want to
install a licensed Vista Home Basic.
I switch off the anti-virus program (esetnod32), hit install button,
and choose installation type (update now or later). Whatever I choose,
I then enter the 25-digit product key to activate the system, and
nothing else happens. The system hangs (I waited for nearly three
hours before my patience ran out))) It happens over and over, with or
without internet connection. I actually can call the Microsoft
helpline, but I have to wait till 11 January: the date when Russian
New Year holidays are over.
Can someone help me sort this out?

Google the term "clean installation of windows vista". When doing the
format and installation, make sure you have only your keyboard, mouse, and
monitor plugged in. You can have speakers plugged in, but they aren't
necessary for the format and installation.

You need to do a clean install.
