What happened to the Zone.com application??

I dont play games much but this is for a friend,

I user to have a small microsoft zone games application that would show some
online
friends and let you select games...

I tried looking on the Zone site, but I could not find it. Did they remove
it?

If not where can I find it?

Or what is the alternative?

The alternative (or the right way) is, when you will participate in any
Zone.com Game by creating a new account then it will ask you to install that
particular application on your machine.

According to me, several time I have participate in Age of Empire game on
Zone.com and the small software was being installed automatically.
