What good is MS Anti-Spyware?

J

John Watson

I installed MS Anti-Spyware a few weeks ago & apart from
alerting initally when installed programmes tried to
accessing, it doesn't do anything! No events recorded in
the any of the "real time protection" logs and when I run
the daily scan no skyware is found.
However, when I run Adaware straight after, it manages to
find half a dozen or so tracking cookies and occasionally
malware(incidentally in about a quarter of the time it
takes MS A-Sky to scan & find nothing).
I'm going to uninstall it now becasuse it is as much good
as the proverbial chocolate teapot. Good job I didn't pay
any money for it.

MSAS in this version does not check cookies since they are not executable
files and are not considered spyware.

And what do you have in place that substitutes for the real-time protection
Microsoft Antispyware affords?

The fact is that many users of this product have a similar experience to
yours. As you've heard, Microsoft Antispyware, in the builds distributed
thus far, does not scan for cookies. Additionally, unlike viruses, there is
no industry standard definition of spyware--and there is also a problem with
false positives in every antispyware product.

Comparative reviewers give Microsoft Antispyware, even in its beta form, top
marks. I don't think their testing protocol is faulty.

I don't know if it is the best. You must remember it still is a Beta
release and there are problems that hopefully will be fixed in the next Beta
release. I think Ewido is the best I have enounteredto date.
I am also Beta testing Trend Micro PCcillin 2006 and it looks pretty darn
powerful.

Hi

Trend Micros Pccillin 2006 must be "state of the art" for
PC protection, I am really satistified after a weeks testing.

But I also really like MSAS Real time protection which also is
state of the for spyware, hopefully there are space for both of them ;)
TM2006 catches everything and real time protection for antivirus must
be disabled so MSAS can clean something !

These 2 together must be something for the bad guys to beat ;)

I

Ira

Plun, glad to find another one who thinks PCcilliin is very good. Another
thing that has impressed me is that there appear to be very few bugs for a
Beta. Really good programmers who have done the work on it. Most of the
problems appear to be with older Windows. I like the anti fraud feature
very much..

I'm pretty pleased with what I'm using:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/onecare/default.mspx

This beta is open to self-nominations from home users in the United States.
Windows XP SP2 only, I believe.

Beta testing an antivirus app is a bit scary--but I was pleased to see an
announcement of a new bagle variant today, an instance of which I received,
and which was properly detected.

Hi Ira

It´s great ! You filled in the Excel sheet and all tests ?
And the antifraud function is really smart.

But one more damned toolbar to remove ;)

The only thing is a possible memory leakage from tmproxy.exe but
it´s on their beta bug list. Goes up to 60MB and thats too much.

B

Bill Sanderson

I can only test a couple of betas at a time or I get too confused--and I'm
currently testing somewhere between 3 and 5!

Lets wait until the products are released and see whether your issue is
visible in reviews and comparison tests by independent reviewers--or do you
think they will want to sweep this under the table?

(I know TrendMicro makes good stuff--I hear quite a bit about it from other
MVP's!)

Hi plun, I don't have any extra toolbar, my regular IE tool bar now has an
icon for anti fraud and it works. Allows or blocks just found Possible or
actual Fraud. I find it really great. I hope MS implements both anti fraud
and cookies.

Hi Ira

Well, I am running IE7 and with IE7 you get a complete new
toolbar........ ;(

I can fill my screen with different toolbars ;)
And within IE7 you also have anti-phising protection.

I wrote a note to TrendMicro that they must make TM2006 compatible with
IE7 and hopefully TM and MS can talk with each other during both
products Beta phase.

I

Ira

plun,
They should also make it compatible with Foxfire---25 million downloads so
far. Still superior to IE7. Both are currently Beta, Firefox is musch
stabler than IE7. With all their money, how come MS can't be the top
software producer, They release too early and then issue SP's. MS anti
spyware is probably one of the few products that they have not rushed to the
market. Hope there is a Beta Two and not a quick release.

Hi

With Firefox there are no problem, Firefox follows standards and
everything is open for all. But with IE7 no one knows beacuse
of coming MSN toolbar and what standards IE7 will follow, hopefully
TrendMicro can make it as good as possible.

And both Firefox Beta 1.5 and IE7 are really stable.

Number of firefoxes are now 80 million ! And thats really good.
Put a burner in the back for MS..........
