What exactly does Smart Card in XP Do??

P

Paul

Hi All,

As it says in the description.

Manages access to smart cards read by this computer. If this service is
stopped, this computer will be unable to read smart cards. If this service
is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

What kind of smart cards is it talking about??

This isn't the same as things like 7-1 card readers is it??

Like CF, Sony Memorysticks, SD, Smartmedia?

Somehow, I dont think it is, coz I use a 7-1 card this service
is off atm, BUT the reader still works (It came with its own
software, for the icons etc. For the removable disk icons).

Also, how would 1 get a certificate or whatever, if u wanted
to use the smart card option on a dial up connection??

Any info appreciated

Thanx

Hi Paul,

A smart card is not the same as your 7 in 1 reader. A smartcard is used as an
alternative login feature. For example, you can use a smartcard to
authenticate
yourself to a network instead of typing your credentials.

Smartcards are also used for authentication to secure webbased banking sites.

To put it another way, a smartcard is used for authentication and your 7 in1
cardreader is used for reading SD, XD cards etc.

I hope this answers your question. If not, try looking up smartcard in a
search
engine for information on smartcards.

Regards,

Wilbrand
