what EXACTLY does it mean to RIP onto a Cd or DVD

I have a DVD-rw drive...

and software that says I can RIP on to the DVD

....this sounds SOOOOO stupid...

but what exactly does it mean to RIP??????

just to put the music on it? from your harddrive? or is it a process of
getting it online?

what is the deal

Ripping usually refers to taking a copy of the media files from a CD or
DVD. Burning usually refers to putting files on a CD or DVD.
