What does this mean?

G'day group, every now and again when I shut down a box comes up with a
yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it saying "Windows is currently
in the middle of a long operation. Either wait for the operation to finish,
or cancel it before you quit Windows"

What "long operation"? It could take at least 5-10 mins before it eventually
shuts down.

Running XP Pro SP2 / GA M59SLI-S5 / 2GB GEIL 6400 / Gainward 7900GS / 320GB
HDD
