What does overclocking memory do?

I'm new to overclocking and was wondering what overclocking the memory
speed gets me in terms of better gameplay? I have a Radeon 9800
Pro/128MB.

sigh how much better do you want? You own one of the fastest cards made. OC'n often times it leads to problems. The 9800's are hot
at normal speeds. MO of course
 
Faster framerates and better benchmarks. Whether it's worth it for a
normally invisible gain depends on how much importance you attach to such
things. Your card is already very fast. If you overclock you could add
another "very" for bragging rights.
