Something like this, perhaps?

PowerPoint doesn't do 'em.

In fact if your desktop publishing text suggests that PowerPoint is a desktop
publishing program ... there's nothing wrong with the book that a couple ounces
of gasoline and a zippo lighter wouldn't cure. <g>

I believe you can do a drop caps using 2 column table.
Just create a 2 column table, put the "T" on the first column, then the rest
of the text in the 2 column.
Increase the font size of "T".
Next, reduce the width of column 1 so that it fits nicely with "T".
Lastly, remove the border.
Will probably post a sample later.

You could probably do something similar with two different text boxes too
(grouped after they're sized and positioned). That'd also allow you to tuck
the paragraph text in underneath e.g. the crossbar of the T if you wanted to.

But you still end up having to use a different object or another row in the
table for the text that follows below the drop cap. I still say that any
textbook that has you doing DTP in PPT needs to be tied to stones and dropped
in a deep part of the bay. ;-)
