What does "Cleaning up X unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9" mean?

Hello all,

I occasionally run chkdsk on Windows XP SP2 as part of disk/filesystem
maintenance and see messages such as "Cleaning up 2 unused index
entries from index $SII of file 0x9". What does this mean? Is there a
problem with the drive?

Can anyone recommend a good book or online resource/tutorial that goes
into the nuts and bolts of the NTFS file system?

Thanks.
