What does '64 bit' mean?

J

Jim

Our local Office Depot has a laptop computer for sale. Everything looked
pretty reasonable, until I got to this: 64-bit.

I have Microsoft Office 2003 on my present desktop computer, and Microsoft
Office 2000 on my present laptop computer.

Will these programs run on a new '64-bit' computer?

(The OS on the for-sale computer is Vista Home Premium. If I get the
computer, I would probably delete Vista and put XP on it.)

Thanks.

The computer is 64bit - but is the Operating System?

Most applications that run on a 32bit version of an operating system will
run on a 64bit version of the same operating system. There may be *some*
issues in a few cases - some strange crashes, etc. But again - a computer
being 64bit capable and having a 64bit operating system installed are two
different things.

Most newer hardware/software can run on either.

Personally - I wouldn't buy a computer from Office Depot, Office Max, Best
Buy, Circuit City, etc... I would order it straight from whatever
manufacturer actually is making the models the big-box stores are seeling at
worst. I would then be able to speak with the manufacturer and make sure it
had everything I needed/wanted and have them explain to me things
(confirming those things with my own Google searches and other research.)

The OP doesn't even know what "64 bit" means (check the subject, why
don't you!?) How likely would it be for a newb like that to do as
you do? HUH????

One can only assume that you are either kidding or you believe the Oiginal
Poster (OP) to be incapable of learning...

I believe the OP asked in order to get advice from people who might not only
be able to give a direct answer - but further advice and direction on how to
get more answers.

Nice try Murphy. But it won't work.
I see from the headers that you posted from comcast using thunderbird
and the faker posted from AOIE using forte, but who is Murphy?

This is what I know about the person who calls himself Murphy:

He does not like people with a Pakistani heritage. No need to prove this
by repeating the vile things he has posted.

There is someone named 'nass' who posts here frequently, trying to help
people with their questions and problems. A decent person. Apparently,
nass is of Pakistani origin. Murphy started to make disgusting, bigoted
posts about nass. That's how this whole big mess started.

Murphy's posts became increasingly revolting. For a short while, nass
tried to fight back, but he quickly realized that nothing is to be
gained by tit-for-tat mudslinging.

One of Murphy's tactics is to 'pretend' to be nass, and then make rude,
disgusting posts, hoping to discredit nass. But those of us who follow
these newsgroups can tell the difference between the real nass and
Murphy, even without checking the headers.

So how did I get mixed up in all this? I came to nass' defense. So now
I'm Murphy's latest target. He's using the same MO on me - pretending to
be me and making rude posts.

What will run and what won't run has nothing to do with the hardware.
It has to do with whether you are running a 64-bit version of Windows
or a 32-bit version. Both versions of Windows will run on 64-bit
hardware.

I don't know the specific answer to the question of whether these
programs will run under 64-bit Windows, but *most* programs will run
on it. The major exception is some of the older utilities.

(The OS on the for-sale computer is Vista Home Premium. If I get the

First of all, assuming that you install 32-bit Windows, the question
you ask is irrelevant.

Be aware of the following: You will need XP drivers for all the
components in the laptop. Depending on what the manufacturer has done,
they may or may not be available. If they are not available (and,
especially with a laptop, they may not be available) XP won't run on
this computer. If you insist in running XP instead of Vista, be sure
to check with the manufacturer regarding the availability of the
drivers you will need before buying it.

Seems as though it is a no-win situation. There is not much one can do

Cool it Murphy, or I'll remind everyone that you said you'd get the

Ain't seen anything from anyone yet - you promised I'd be jailed by
