Greetings.

What freeware utility do you use to keep track of updates to freeware
besides looking in ACF?

Thank you.

In my browser favorites I have created a folder called Updates with a
bookmark for the download page of every piece of software I have installed
on my machine. My browser (Avant) can open all these links at one time to
see if there are new versions.

Other great resources are:

http://www.filehippo.com/
http://www.versiontracker.com/windows/
http://cws.internet.com/updates/1-d.htm

Thanks. I read GRC daily but missed this one

Frankly, I gave up on trying to update every single piece of software
that's installed on my system. If not upgrading a program doesn't cause
a security problem and the program does what I want, then why bother?
Also, in many cases upgrading a program can lead to a loss of features
that uninstalling the program and reinstalling the older version won't
correct. A good example of this is TMPGEnc. The newer version is
crippled after a period of time. Next time I do a total reinstall, I'm
going to install the older version and stick with it.

None, basically. Some programs, including those that can cause security
problems if outdated (web browsers, AV etc), take care of it themselves by
checking for new versions periodically or on startup. Other than that I
usually don't care to update unless I have a specific reason to. And no,
newer and shinier version number does not constitute a "specific reason to
upgrade". Some programs (like WinAmp) I even stick to old versions on
purpose.

If you really want a free software setup which is easy to keep up to date
you are probably best off using some Linux distro, and strictly sticking to
programs that are served as packages under that specific distro. The major
desktop-oriented distros are a breeze to keep updated. Kinda like Microsofts
Windows Update, except it also keeps track of all your installed programs.
