What do I do with the following files on my hard drive...

Hello everyone,

I'm looking through the files and folders on my hard drive and I come across
a folder called "found.000". In the folder in contains file0000.chk,
file0001.chk, file0002.chk, file0003.chk, etc. in numerical order. I was
wondering what are these files for and can I just delete them?

Thanks to all who reply,

You can usually delete these files. They are the result of the ScanDisk
utility. This usually happens after a crash or when Windows shuts down
improperly. To be on the safe side, you may want to run ScanDisk and/or
CHKDSK to check the integrity of the hard drive.

The .chk extension refers to chkdsk, also known as Error Checking, which has
replaced scandisk in Windows XP.

When Error Checking finds bits and pieces that used to be part of a complete
file, it names them file000x.chk.

You should view the contents of each .chk file to see if it contains
information that is important to you. If not, you can delete them.

How can a person view these file to see if any important data are contained
within them? Do these files ever contain any important data that windows
needs in order for it to run properly?

Try viewing with Notepad. If you have a file viewer like QuickView Plus, use
that. Remember, you are looking at bits and pieces of files. Don't expect to
find much of anything useful.

These files don't contain anything that Windows needs to run.
