What devices must be powered up when running Windoze Update?

I learned today, and I should have realized this on my own, tat USB devices
have to be powered up when running Windoze update.
I usually unplug my USB scanner when not in use.
Today, Windoze update decided to download an update dated 2 Oct 2001 for the
Epson drivers.
This taught me the lesson that USB devices must be powered up.
I expect the same applies to Firewire.

What about external SCSI or ATAPI drives?

What about printers connected to serial or parallel port?
What about speakers?
