What causes desktop icons to change

What would cause desktop icons to revert to the generic Internet
Explorer icon. I have a number of icons that depict the specific web
page with its own icon. Occasionally these all spontaneously change to
show the IE browser icon and I haven't figured out why.

Anyone offer a reason and workaround?

What you are describing is favicons.

They are stored in the temporary internet files cache
until you empty it. After that, the links will revert to
the generic IE icon. You can get around this by using
a third-party application like FavOrg (freeware).

I think perhaps it only shows the Page Specific Icons, when you are
connected or have been connected during that session...SO if you reboot
and don't reconnect you get a IE icon...
But if I am wrong, sorry...
