What can Windows tell me about (multiple) connected Routers?

Let's say my setup looks like this:

(WindowsXP PC) <--> (Ethernet Card) <--> (Custom Router) <--> (Linksys
Switch) <--> (Linksys Router) <--> (Cable Modem) <--> (Internet)

I'm wondering what information about each of those devices (MAC
address, brand, that they exist, etc.) can be obtained *from the
Windows PC*.

Are there programs or utilities I can run on the PC to tell me that
they all exist? Can I get information about each device between myself
and the Internet? Assume that I have no login/password info for
any of the devices.

I've tried ethereal, but am not really sure exactly what/where I should
be looking.

To put another way: If I sat down at a strange windowsxp pc that was
connected to the internet, but I
was blind as to what hardware existed between it and the net...what
information could I get about
each device, and could I get an accurate picture of what the network
looked like?

Not sure your example "setup" would function - however Windows Server 2003
includes a "bunch" of utilities such as Network Monitor, Netcap.exe, Tracert
which provides details.
Tracert is included with XP - if you type "tracert microsoft.com" at a
command prompt you will have a listing of the route taken.

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

(The example setup I gave actually is my setup right now)

Tracert only gives me the ip of the first device I'm hooked up to...in
this
case the "Custom Router".

Pathping also only gives a couple IP's.

No MAC's, make/model, or anything else informative.

Hi,

Yes, I suppose I am. I was pointed to the solarwinds.com site, and
tried all
their utilities. Some were interesting. But ultimately, all they
could tell
me was the MAC address of the first router I was connected to.

Based on the MAC address you can then determine the manufacuturer of the
device. There are several tools on the web to do mac lookups.
