I can't find the regular settings to begin using windows mail....just got
Vista, and never used Outlook....but I can't find the POP and SMTP settings.
Does anyone know what they are?? I would appreciate any help anyone could
give....thanks

You need to enter the settings required to access your current email
account.
Your email provider should have a help page on their website with the proper
settings.
Keep in mind that Windows Mail can only access POP and IMAP email accounts
(not webmail (http), or Hotmail).

Who is your mail provider? If you don't know, give us the part
of your email address after the @ symbol.
Each mail provider has their own mail servers with unique settings.
They will typically have a web page with email setup instructions.

for the settings
incoming is mail.then your isp then .net
outgoing is smtp. isp then .net
who is your internet provider and i will help more if you like

Not in all cases.

My incoming AND outgoing are both mail.xxxx.xxxx

To those having trouble - don't feel bad - I'm in the same boat & it's so
frustrating when you feel the ISPs withhold info & just screw w/ you to get
a laugh.

I'm taking Larry's advice - thnx Larry.

Odds of me getting this right ?? Slim to nil . . .

Did you go to your mail provider's help / setup web page and follow the
setup procedure? If you tell us who that is, maybe we can help you find it.

I tried the 'bellsouth' instead of 'att' for the ingoing / outgoing & still
get error msgs for 'server login failed' .

Thnx goes to Robert for the effort - I swear I'm destined for failure on
this stuff & I'm no dumb-a-- .

It is misleading to generalize.
Many mail providers deviate from those server naming conventions.

I just set up my new laptop using windows mail... am not familiar with it
either, but in your incoming and outgoing setup.... you need to put who your
provider is now... like I have verizon and I set up windows mail with my
pop3 as incoming.verizon.net which got all my emails from my verizon sent to
my new windows mail.... same with your outgoing.... should be the same,
instead of incoming you would put outgoing.... hope it works for you

I'll know more when I get to work this AM to see if test msgs to my other
email works.

Thnx for the help.

ok, let us know, and by the way, you can send a test message to yourself and
get an almost immediate indications if you have a problem, or not.

I definitely still have a problem. I went through all the screen
verification info from the support.att & it's gotta be my password - I'm not
wearing my secret decoder ring today.

On the 'task/error' pg, I get 'ERR-login failed'.

I'm gonna try the password change tool, but not holding out much hope.

This is so important for my business to make this work & can't believe I get
into this mess.

Thnx in advance for the help.

Some email servers insist that you enter the usernames with no CAPITAL
LETTERS. Some insist that you follow it with the part of your email
address that starts with @, and some insist that you don't. Many insist
that you use CAPITAL and lowercase letters in the correct places in
your password. Some of them give error messages that don't tell you
whether it was the username, the password, or both, that was wrong.
