What are the Content.IE5 folders

Jeff

I'm on XP Home using IE6. Yet when searching for index.dat I discovered a
number existing within "Content.IE5" folders.

They are located deep within Documents and Settings\...\Local
settings\Temporary Internet Files and have recently modified dates even
though I am using IE 6. What is disturbing is that Disk Cleanup does not
empty those folders even though Temp Internet Files is selected.

Can I delete their contents which in some cases contain more than just
index.dat files?

Thanks.

Hi,
The index.dat files are just another part of the caching/indexing system for
IE. There are legitimate reasons to occasionally delete the index.dat files.
The *safe* method is to delete the folder containing the index.dat file.

Instructions for deleting the History and Temporary Internet Files folder
can be found at http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

The content.ie5 folders should be emptied when you clear the TIF from
Internet Options> General and check "Delete offline content" when that box
pops up. If you delete the TIF folder to eliminate the content.ie5 folders,
they'll be recreated.

A google search for index.dat will turn up *much* information- and a fair
amount of speculation and paranoia. ;-)

Hope this helps,

I was just wondering why they were called IE5 when I am using IE6?
