I get loads of .dat files similar to the subject in my
windows/temp folder, which I delete weekly.
What are they (???system monitor???) ?
How can I stop them, if recommended to do so?
WinXP home with all updates, 2.1GHz, 512mb ram, 70% empty hard drives,
no other problems.

They are files generated by performance monitor. If you are not running the
utility yourself then you must have a program installed that is generating
them for you (perhaps Diskeeper?). If you delete them without incident then
you can just write a batch script that deletes them on startup by putting
them in the startup folder, or if you don't restart that often and they keep
showing up perhaps you can schedule the script to run at regular intervals.

Thanks. I did indeed have Diskeeper, deleted it through add/remove
programs many months ago. Guess I will do a search for add'l program
files leftover and then the registry.
