In order to create an index, what are marks? And how do I use them?

Hi, Fizz,

Look in the Word help for the topic "Create an index". It explains in
detail how to "mark" the document.

The marks themselves are fields, with XE as the keyword followed by
the text that will appear in the index (the "entry") and optional
switches that are discussed in the topic "Field codes: XE (Index
Entry) field".

When you insert an INDEX field in the document, it simply collects all
the entries that exist in the XE fields, and alphabetically lists each
one with its page number.

The entries in the XE fields may -- but don't have to -- be the same
as the text that appears in the document at that point. As a simple
example, if you're indexing people's names, the marked text might look
like this:

... the chairman of Microsoft is Bill Gates {XE "Gates, Bill"}

so the entry is alphabetized under 'G' and appears as

Gates, Bill ................. 75

If you use a colon :)) instead of a comma, the part after the colon is
a subentry, and will be indented under the main entry.
