Using the dash "-" in an index

When creating an index of names, if the given name is unknown frequently the
dash "----" is used. When using this in an index mark ie: XE
"LastName:-----" the dash characters don't show in the index, only the basic
mark (and no page number).
I get:
LastName

What I want is:
LastName
----
I tried using an escape char: XE "LastName:/----"
but this shows:

LastName
/-----

Any ideas?? Thanks, Willy

Try using an em dash, - . Enter it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+numberpad-minus, or
by holding the Alt key while typing 0151 on the number pad. If it isn't long
enough, use two of them; they'll match end-to-end to look like one long
dash.

You can assign an easier shortcut key to it. Read
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/InsertSpecChars.htm, especially the
paragraph under "Shortcut keys" that starts with "Note that there are no
assigned shortcut keys for some of the characters."

I can't imagine what "look" you're trying for. A three-em dash is what's
used for repeated names in bibliographies. In an index, I would think that
generic Smiths would come directly under Smith, followed by the breakdown
for Smith, John; Smith, Margaret; etc.
