Windows updates came up unasked and had updates that
claimed critical, and i down loaded then, well i started,

computer must be restarted, i waited for it to do so
automatically as the omne before it did, and nothing
restarted . so i cllicked restart myself and still
nothing, and i'm stuck with a computer that will not turn
off, and all the support center is offering is you guys or
phone numbers wanting up to 300.00 to call, i am irate
with this i am sure you can understand that, do you have
information on how to make windows fix this, thank you

Hope this helps. Might run a virus scan just to on the
safe side too.

I know its no consolation now but if you do get a fix i
suggest that you turn automatic updates off.
click start>control panel>system>automatic updates
tab>uncheck "keep my computer up to date"> apply then ok.
if in future you want to update, then you can choose
which updates to download, I hope that this is helpful
for the future. good luck.

This is frequently caused by an application or similar that won't close.

Make a note of the time when you attempt a shutdown then have a look in the
event logs to see if there are any errors around this time. To do this run
the "Event Viewer" application in admin tools or type same into Help &
Support system. (You need to look in both the "System" and "Application"
event logs).

If you find an error event near the time you wrote down see if it mentions
an application causing a problem. If you double click on an entry and you
see more information and possibly a link to follow where you can find even
more (sometimes even the solution) There is also a button that copies a
description of the event to the clip board. You can then paste it into a new
newsgroup message..

eg... "My computer won't shut down. I've had a look in the event log and
contains this error event..... <paste event here>"
