What about WGA v1.5.0540.0???

F

Fred S *****

Hi,

I checked my version of WGA as listed in KB 921914 and the version I
have is NOT included there.

I have v1.5.0540 and the KB article refers only to v1.5.0527.0 to
1.5.0532.2 as being able to be removed/disabled.

How to disable or uninstall WGA
|>http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921914

Can someone advise how I can remove the version I have?

Thanks, Fred

The KB article is entitled "How to disable or uninstall the pilot version of
Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications"

v1.5.0540 is not a pilot version and cannot be disabled or uninstalled
(without using a third-party application).

See if this will help:

How to manually uninstall WGA Notifications
Click Start > Control Panel
Click Add or Remove Programs
Click the Show updates checkbox (not present on my Windows XP Home
installation until I installed XP SP2)
Fire up Windows Explorer
Click Tools > Folder Options ... and click on the View tab
Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types (this is needed for the step
where we rename WgaTray.exe, otherwise it will be renamed WgaTray.old.exe,
although I guess that calling it WgaTray.old.exe would work) and click OK

Rename %Windir%\system32\WgaLogon.dll
to
%Windir%\system32\WgaLogon.old
Rename %Windir%\system32\WgaTray.exe
to
%Windir%\system32\WgaTray.old
Reboot
Click Start > Run, type:
cmd
Click OK and at the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER
Regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\LegitCheckControl.dll /u
Reboot
Delete
%Windir%\system32\LegitCheckControl.dll
(the other two files listed in the uninstall article don't exist because
they have been renamed earlier)
Click Start > Run and type:
regedit
Locate and then right-click the following registry subkeys and click Delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\
CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WgaLogon

Poor Carey. He really doesn't get it. About any of this, more and more
every day. He's so hyped up on spinning the crap he just doesn't understand
the real life situation people are going through on this issue.

He's a company man doing his job. What did you expect? BTW, I see someone
has started a class action lawsuit against Microsoft over WGA.

He is not an employee of MS. He is a MVP.

Is that so? What are you doing here then?

That's just not true, NoStop, and it's a terrible thing to say when so
many of these MVPs spend hours of time doing what they can to help
people solve their problems.

I've found many of the MVPs to be quite well-versed in their area of
expertise--as evidenced by the fact that the problems presented to them
are solved. There are exceptions, as we all know, but to paint with such
a broad brush is patently unfair.

You should know by now that NoStop is very much a troll ;-)

I like NoStop, Tom, but I really, really didn't like that post. A
well-crafted troll requires a couple of grains of truth, and I didn't
see even an iota.

For some people, these forums are an invaluable resource, and while I'm
all for giving Microsoft bucketloads of criticism when it does something
wrong, I don't think that going after the MVPs collectively serves any
purpose.

It has to be very disheartening for someone to take the time to help
others only to see their efforts denigrated this way.

If NoStop had taken a couple of individual shots, I'd not have said a
word, but this post just wasn't fair.

I agree entirely. Most MVPs are very helpful and do know what they're
doing. My computer's a$$ was saved many times by their advice.
