WGA now compulsory for getting Windows updates ???

Didnt MS promise that not choosing to have WGA etc on your computer would
not bar you from getting the critical/security updates?

Someone can correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believed that applied to
WGA/N (KB905474) and not the earlier version of WGA.

Really, I'm not trying to be funny, but I don't see what the problem
is. It's in all our interests to get rid of piracy, isn't it? So I
download WGA, so what? I get the updates. Please sincerely convince
me of the problem.

It is partly the principle of being told your are a thief unless you can
prove you are not. Maybe a naive concept these days, but I used to think
law was "innocent until proved guilty", and not the other way round.

Also, it doesn't bite the real pirates! They have cracks that avoid the
whole issue. Only genuine customers are messed around by all this WGA
stuff.

Accepting something just because "it ain't gonna bite your arse unless"
is not always a good idea. Bit like the government ID cards issue.

No cause for alarm...live with it. It ain't gonna bite your arse
unless you have a pirated copy of Winders.

is not always a good idea. Ends up that the only arses that get bitten
are the genuine users. Pirates laugh all the way to their crack sites...

Have MS now made installation of WGA compulsory, if you want to use the
Windows Update web site?

I just tried the update site and got the following message.

(Oh, and yes, my copy of XP is 100% legal. I just previously declined to
install all the WGA stuff)

------------
Software Upgrade for Some Windows Components Required

To use Microsoft Update, you must first install the latest version of
some Windows components. This will allow your computer to work with these
new features on the site:

Details

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
1.1 MB , less than 1 minute
The Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool enables you to verify that
your copy of Microsoft Windows is genuine. The tool validates your
Windows installation by checking Windows Product Identification and
Product Activation status.

Whether done manually with automatic windows update, or, going to windows
update site manually, WGA verification is required. Whether the more recent
updates are critical or not is immaterial.

Yes, WGA (KB892130) calls home everytime you connect to the internet after
installation.

Considering I just reinstalled XP on one computer, I have no WGA on it and
don't have any plans to put it on it either.

You have no choice if downloading any XP update.

Thankyou. Deleted. All future updates courtesy of AutoPatcher. Enough is

Now it's required with Auto Updates? Are you sure?

What if I use Auto Update? So far, it has not offered WGA but I haven't
tried it this month yet.

Have you got a link for AutoPatcher?

Seems as though MS is bound and determined to WGA itself out of
business. I plan to use Auto Update this weekend for the updates as I
refuse to install WGA or any of its flavors.

And, how long before Auto Update puts WGA on for you? It's coming.

Only if MS decides to let pirated copies of XP go unpatched which would
lead to chaos on the Net. Not likely as this would be a money loser for
MS and many other corporations and you know how MS feels about losing money.

Most people are honest. Proof of this are the billions that MS made
off of Win 3.0 up through Win Me. Now they're getting greedy and
showing complete disdain for their paying customers. This cannot bode
well for MS.

Most people ARE honest. Unfortunately, there are some that are not. For
every "stolen" copy of Windows, Microsoft has to sell a significant number
of copies to recoup the loss. Further, there are many in the distribution
chain that are losing out on their livelihood due to theft.

But Microsoft and the wholesalers, retailers, and shippers are not the only
victims. Often the end user is a victim, too. He gets a system that will not
be supported and is often riddled with malware. His business may fail or he
may even die if the system is a mission-critical one.

It is in everyone's interest to do what is necessary to minimize theft.

The fact that I own a shit-load of Microsoft stock has not influenced this
position.

I have a theory about this. I think there's a huge department at MS
dedicated to 'revenue protection' and they justify their existence by
maximisng the revenue from XP activations. As long as it looks like
they make more money hassling punters with WGA than it costs to run
the department (with its canteen and its gym and its carpark full of
Mercs and BMWs) they will go on and on and on and every time we want
to switch the bloody machine on we will be asked to verify the
installation YET AGAIN. Every single patch for the last few months
has come with WGA asking if this is a legit copy of Windows. YES IT
SODDING IS I TOLD YOU THAT YESTERDAY AND YOU STILL HAD TO CHECK FOR
YOURSELF AND NOW YOU'RE ASKING ME AGAIN.

And of course legit customers get more and more pissed off and
irritated because people with cracked versions don't get this grief.
It's like the copyright warnings on DVD you can't skip - the only
people who don't have to sit through the boilerplate and the threats
and hectoring and lecturing and fingerwagging are THE BLOODY PIRATES.

phew. Sorry, rant over.

You forgot to mention the Volvos, Jaguars, and Saabs.

MS won't let you do a custom download unless you install this first. So,
with that in mind, by doing automatic updates I would think that you are
giving MS the OK to install.

I will not allow the MS WGA crap on any of my computers.

Custom install on the WU web site or custom install using Automatic
Updates? Or both? Are you confusing Express Install with Custom Install?

So the activation method is completely pointless and only goes as far to
lock down the computer for people who don't want to activate or pirates
who can't figure out how to download one of these.

Bingo. The point isn't to stop piracy altogether--if it stops the casual
pirates, then they've reached their goal.

Didnt MS promise that not choosing to have WGA etc on your computer would
not bar you from getting the critical/security updates? - but you would not
be offered other updates - I have at least 20 of these others, none of which
apply to my system, hidden away in the Hide Folder.
It would appear that there are some who cannot get this months criticals
without first downloading WGA VT - and it comes disguised as something
completely different?

I don't have WGA installed and I got all critical updates yesterday.
But, I downloaded them manually as "automatic" would slow my dialup
connection down to a "useless connection." I don't want any stinkin'
spyware on my PCs, but I can show my genuine holograph Windows XP Home
stickers to the software police if need be.

Are you sure that MS didn't "sneak" WGA in, unbeknownst to you?
