western digital hard drive, broke?

my mates hard drive can't be detected by the bios and makes a constant
ticking noise. any way of recovering or is back to shop job?

The drive had died.

It may be possible to recover the data off it if it hasnt been backup up properly.

Western Digitals are know for their "Click of death",
or "tick of death" in your case.
Hopefully the drive is still under warranty.
If under warranty, WD will replace your drive
but will not do anything about the data on the "Ticking" drive.
You will need to send the drive to a "data recovery" business
to retrieve your files.
