Well it's true...Windows does rule!

Seriously...how could Linux ever compete? I mean, lets look at what I did
today.

What did I do today? I decided to give my on-bard sound card a run instead
of my Audigy 2. Was having some weird sound artifacts and wanted to rule
out the sound card as being the source of the trouble (it wasn't, just a
software config problem).

So...my experience under unbuntu after removing the Audigy and enabling the
on-board sound:

It finished booting...I instantly had sound. I mean it sucked. What a
horrible user experience! I didn't have to do ANYTHING!!!! It just WORKED!
I mean...that's just horrible, where's the fun in that? How dare it just
WORK like that?? That's just....wrong! This just totally sucks!

Now my (quite Wowing) experience under Windows:

Now Windows on the other hand got it right! Excellent user experience,
really making the user feel like they are RESPONSIBLE for their machine and
in control!! Yes!!! It was wonderful.

First I of course did NOT have sound with the new soundcard. Instead I was
greeted with the "New hardware found" WIZARD! Didn't know my computer can
cast spells...

So it tells me it found some "Audio on high definition audio bus" or some
other thing like that. Allright...whatever. Now it asks me if I'd like it
to check for drivers online so I click next....and go do something else for
5 minutes. Eventually it finally FINISHES! Do I have sound yet? Naw....just
a message that it couldn't find any drivers or anything.

This is getting better and better by the minute!! Now I get to go search my
motherboard driver CD that I haven't needed in 8 months. FUN!!!

CRAP! 15 minutes later....I still haven't found the CD...and I still have no
sound!!! What to do...what to do...oh maybe the manufacturer will have it
on their website?

Go to website...downloads...erm crap, now what exactly was my motherboards
exact model number again?? I only have over a hundred to choose from!
Luckily for me I actually remember!

Oh lookie! Now I get a list of 30 different various drivers to choose from!
YAY!!! Erm...ok this one looks like it might work. Wait a second, 24
megabytes and the best I am getting is 80kb/s on my 6mbit connection from
any of the mirrors?? Great! Time to like...go wash the car or do something
else productive.

Yay!! Driver downloaded. Erm...zip file? Ok. open it. Run setup. What?
Invalid operating system version? Wait a second!! I know I clicked on the
right one! Oh wait...there is a subdirectory here. Oh nice!! 4 other
different setups to choose from. Maybe one will work?

Ok after running the one that is most likely to work and that does not
complain about the OS...REBOOT!!! I get to reboot my operating system!!!
YES!!! I am in pure exctasy now! I mean how often does someone get to
reboot their operating system!? Isn't that just WONDERFUL?

Wait for windows to shut down...
Wait for windows to boot up...
Yay!! I successfully installed my sound drivers!! See in this operating
system, *I* am in control and have to actually MAKE the operating system do
what I want it to do!! It doesn't just automatically do it for me, that'd
be poor user experience. The Wow is definitely starting here.

Total time to get sound working under ubuntu: Operating system boot up time
of a few seconds.

Total time to get sound working under windows: 30-45 minutes.

Yea, I can really see why windows is superior. Such an immersive user
experience is definitely difficult to beat!!

Note to the sarcasm impaired: LOTS of it was used in this post. Matter of
fact, it is drowning in it.

So what he is saying is that he is too stupid to know how to install

did it for him.

And how about changing some other words around? Like "sleaze" instead of
"cheese"? Or maybe "automomonster" instead of "automobile"? We could have
fun all day doing that kind of stuff. Or maybe I should say, "doing that

This is a wonderful Windows "feature". In all the years I've used
Windows I haven't seen it yet, not even once, go looking out on the
web for something and not come back empty handed. This is built-in
frustration. Not only is Windows so dumb it can't find codecs and
drivers already installed and being used by other software on your
system, it will endlessly try in vain to try to find what it says it
needs, then fail in the attempt.
So what he is saying is that he is too stupid to know how to install
sound drivers under windows...and urbuttoo is smarter than he is and it
did it for him.

No Frank, Microsoft has brainwashed dummies like you into thinking it
is suppose to be normal for a new version of Windows to not work and
you've been trained to wait 9 months or longer for some service pack.
You're brained washed into foolishly accepting on faith every thing
wrong is due to third party vendors. Never ever is there anything
wrong with Windows itself. You being a fool, eagerly, willinging and
obediently accept this often repeated line of bullshit.

Well if you didn't notice Frank, the sound drivers were installed correctly.
I was simply commenting on the most excellent experience Windows provides
in the process. So I am quite capable of installing my drivers under
windows. =)

Hmmm... I'm not sure that blog entry is the best indicator of printing
difficulties in Vista (there are probably better ones out there :).

The blogger is actually a ranting on himself for not checking for drivers
before the upgrade and to HP for not supplying the drivers. The post was made
at the beginning of October and he was using Beta 2 TR of Vista.

I can't vouch for when HP made their drivers for the 2600N available, but
they appear to be the originals dated 22 Mar 2007.
