Can anyone tell me why the movie that I have finished and saved to CD-R will
only play sound in Windows Media Player? When I saved it it wrote to the
disk as a WMV file.

It's possibly something to do with the codec. I'm at work at the moment so
can't give a succinct answer. I've had this where other software will play a
video but Media Player does what you said. I think somewhere in Media Player
you can set to look for codecs? Could also try searching for video codecs on
the web.
