Welcome to System Restore

You can use System Restore to undo harmful changes to your computer and
restore its settings and performance. System Restore returns your computer
to an earlier time (called a restore point) without causing you to lose
recent work such as saved documents, e-mail, or history and favorites lists.
</quite>

Is this absolutely true? I did a system restore on my wife's machine this
morning (after installing and uninstalling a utility) and now she's
complaining that revisions she made in her novel yesterday have disappeared.
(She doesn't know I did the installing/uninstalling or system restore. In
fact she has no conception of such things. However she does know that I make
a copy of her work to a flash disk every day and now she's blaming this fup
on that.)

Whatever I say won't convince her but for my own peace of mind, is it
absolutely certain that system restores have no affect on the My Documents
folder?

I've never known system restore to replace user files. They do make
modifications to shortcut files though... perhaps the shortcut was replaced
and is now linking to an older copy of the document?

What application was the novel created in?

(She doesn't know I did the installing/uninstalling or

You could start System Restore and choose "undo my last restoration".

Documents folder?

This is correct.
