WELCOME SCREEN LOGON

S

smiley

Hi,

I did something but don't know what that has caused me to get the Welcome
screen and then have to click on my user name. I'm the only user of this
computer so would like to bypass.

What follows is the text from an email that seems to address just this issue
although XP was not reinstalled. I have done as it says and left the
password field blank but the Welcome screen is still coming up.

Can anyone help please?

Hi Folks!
[snip]

I've just had Win XP Pro reinstalled (local shop) and I'm
annoyed by the welcome screen demanding that I click my name
before Windows starts. Can I not easily skip this and go
right to Windows?

[snip]

Go to Start -> Run.
Copy and paste the following into the Open box:

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
In the "Users of this computer" box, click on the User you want
to have logged on automatically.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer".
Click OK.
In the box that pops up, make sure the account you clicked on
earlier is entered next to User Name.
Enter your password twice.
Note: You can leave the password box blank if the account does
not have a password.
Click OK.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

Good luck

Hi,

First I didn't mean to SHOUT in the Subject line. Sorry!
Second, I am using XP Home Edition and think perhaps that's why these
instructions didn't solve my problem.

If you had problems using control userpasswords2 to configure
automatic logon then you might want to try the following.

Go to this web site and download TweakUI from Microsoft.

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Direct download of TweakUI
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once you've downloaded TweakUI, install the program.
Once installed, you'll find the TweakUI on your Start menu
under Powertoys for Windows XP.
Start the program and click on the + sign next to Logon.
Under Logon, click on Autologon.
Enter the name of your user account in the User Name box.
Put a check mark in the box next to "Log on automatically at
system startup".
Click on the "Set password" button and enter your password
twice.
Note: You can skip this step if your account has a blank
password.
Click OK.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

Post back if you run into any problems.

Good luck

A Windows update maybe?

[[When you install the .NET Framework 1.1, a hidden local user account that
is named ASPNET is created. When you start Windows, Windows treats the
ASPNET local user account as an additional user account, although the ASPNET
user account is hidden. Therefore, the Welcome screen appears and prompts
you to click your user name.]]

You might be the only USER but are you the only person who might have ACCESS
to your machine? If not, then you might want to reconsider this....

Hi,

Thank you to everyone who replied. I tried this method first because it was
the quickest and it seemed to work. I *thought* this is what I did the
first time so am not sure why it worked this time and not the first time.

TweakUI is installed on my PC and that would have been my next option.

And to Gordon who thought there might be other people who have access to my
PC even though I am the only *user* the answer is no. My husband is the
only other person in the home and I can't even get him to do email! LOL

Glad to know that problem is solved.

I really hate to have to tell you this but after all your suggestions and it
appearing to work, alas! the Welcome Screen was back. But only after the
screen saver came on. So I looked in Control Panel, Display, Screen Saver.
And guess what? There is a little check box that says "on resume, display
welcome screen." I haven't a clue how it got checked. It had to be me, of
course, but have no recollection of having done so.

We can now close the book on this one. blush
