welcome screen lags upon clicking on my name

I set up my brand new Compaq laptop to a network at
college, and ever since I have put a password requirement
on my welcome screen there has been a 1 or 2 minute delay
between the time I click the arrow (which effectively
represents the transfer from the welcome screen to the
desktop) and the time "loading your personal settings"
arrives below my name. For the first few days, after
clicking on my name, an arrival at the desktop was
instantaneous, but now....
Please help

Hi Michael,

If you create another user account, does the same thing happen with it? If
not, start with the startup load under your profile. Shortcuts placed here
may be the problem:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
