welcome screen ID pictures are all the same-why?

B

Brad Schmitz

I just loaded WinXPsp2, ran all the updates. I have 3 user ID's. In control
Panel, User Accounts they all have different "pictures" attached to the
different ID's but on the "Welcome Screen" they all have the same Picture
attached to they're name and it's a different Picture than any other ID
that's being used.
All ID's on the Welcome Screen have the "chess" icon/picture, in the User
Accounts in Control Panel none of the ID's have that icon/picture. How did
that happen and how can I change them back. I want to blame it on one of the
updates but I'm not sure at what stage this happened. When I first installed
XP with the 3 ID's they all had different icon/pics on the Welcome Screen. I
have even changed the pictures in Control Panel thinking if I change it and
save it, it'll change on the Welcome Screen. Didn't work. Where is this
information in the registry? Could something be over riding my setting thru
the registry? Brad

Brad,

To determine if this is an NTFS permission problem, try this (of course for
NTFS partitions only):

Click Start, Run and type this:

- cmd /k CD %allusersprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account
Pictures

Type :
- CACLS * >C:\Permissions.txt

Then open C:\Permissions.txt using Notepad, and post the information here.

Ramesh,
Here's what I've got. ("CACLS*" didn't work, had to run it without the *)

Displays or modifies access control lists (ACLs) of files
CACLS filename [/T] [/E] [/C] [/G user:perm] [/R user [...]]
[/P user:perm [...]] [/D user [...]]
filename Displays ACLs.
/T Changes ACLs of specified files in
the current directory and all subdirectories.
/E Edit ACL instead of replacing it.
/C Continue on access denied errors.
/G user:perm Grant specified user access rights.
Perm can be: R Read
W Write
C Change (write)
F Full control
/R user Revoke specified user's access rights (only valid with /E).
/P user:perm Replace specified user's access rights.
Perm can be: N None
R Read
W Write
C Change (write)
F Full control
/D user Deny specified user access.
Wildcards can be used to specify more that one file in a command.
You can specify more than one user in a command.

Abbreviations:
CI - Container Inherit.
The ACE will be inherited by directories.
OI - Object Inherit.
The ACE will be inherited by files.
IO - Inherit Only.
The ACE does not apply to the current file/directory.

Brad,

The "Everyone" and "SYSTEM" groups are missing in the list. Right-click the
"User Account pictures" folder and choose Properties. In the Security tab,
add SYSTEM to the list, and assign "Full Control" to it.

Using AccessEnum is a nice way to view file / folder / registry permissions.

Ramesh,

I tried as you suggested but I don't have a "security" tab under
'Properties'. When I go to Properties all I have for tabs are; 'General',
'Sharing' and 'Customize'. What am I missing now?

Ramesh,
I did some browsing through your web sites; MVPS.ORG. I followed out tip #
146 How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP
http://www.winxptutor.com/ownership.htm
it mentioned I needed to disable Simple File Sharing. When I did the
security tab showed up and the "System" was already listed so I logged off.
My Icon/pictures were back. I did have to go into Conrol Panel and change
(re-select) the Icon I wanted for the other UserID before it changed back
but it worked. Thanks for your assistance and your web sites and
information.

Ramesh,
I also realized you were more correct than I was. You mentioned I would have
to "add" the 'system group' to the Security tab. I forgot the Pc I was
working (experimenting) with I had also tried a 'system restore'. As I tried
this with another machine with out doing a 'system restore' the "system
group" WAS missing from the security tab and I did have to add it AND give
it 'full control'. Apparently trying a system restore, restored the system
group to the security tab but still didn't change my icons back on the first
machine.
I wanted to thank you again for your help and clarify what I found and did.
I have figured out what piece of software we're using that's causing the
problem. I just don't know why it's doing that. Every time I load that piece
of software it changes the Icons and removes the system group from the
security tab.
Again, Thank You very much.
