welcome screen and users hiding

Sam

Is there anyway I can hide the usernames that are listed on the Windows
XP Pro welcome screen (alongwith their picture icons) and still have the
"switch user" feature? I am looking for just the username-login dialog
welcome screen.

thanks,
Sam.

Control Panel | User accounts | Change the way users log on or off.
Untick use the Welcome Screen.

Thanks, I will try this when I can fiddle with the laptop when it is
free. But, will this method still let me switch users at will?

Thanks. I am away from the laptop right now and I will try this. Just
wondering, are you sure it will still let me switch users?

Sam.

I just tried that. And if I check the option of not using welcome screen
the option of "fast switching" is also disabled. Seems like fast
switching works only if the welcome screen is used (which shows all
users' icons and login names).

Since you seem to be quite sure that switch user works no matter what is
the welcome screen method, perhaps I am missing something. Could you
give details how you think your method works?

Sorry I didn't realize you meant fast user switching. I thought you
meant just a logoff then login. No, the welcome screen is needed for
fast user switching.

If you Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

On its Logon page you can uncheck 'Show xxxxxx on Welcome screen' for
the users that you do not want seen. Not sure quite how that affects
switch; but holding down shift as Welcome comes up should show all again

Okay. I also discovered that you can change a registry entry to prevent
a particular user's login name to appear on welcome screen. Maybe the
TweakUI and this is one and the same thing.

However, this really interests me. MS has such a huge amount of
experience behind them in making OS and other software. I do not expect
that there is a technical difficulty in allowing fast switching while
Welcome Screen is off. Then what gives?

Sam,

You can hide or add any user at will including the System Admin. And yes,
the Welcome Screen works along side FUS. Which brings up a thought, if you
didn't have any other users, nor used the Welcome Screen which profile would
you be switching to?

I think I do not understand your question. You are saying that if I do
not have any user and neither the welcome screen, the computer wouldn't
know which profile to load? If I have understood your question correctly
then:
Well, as far as software engineering goes, this is just really bad
design. To begin with, why was the machine put in this state where it is
not aware of any user? When an OS is installed, good practice is to
force the installation person to make a defualt user. Administrator is
already there, so "the installer must make a power user and preferably a
normal user as well during time of installation. S/he may make other
normal users after installation is complete." If there is more to your
question's answer, you will have to explain your question further.

Secondly, what did Windows NT and Windows 2000 do? I realize they did
not have fast user switching feature, I am just trying to find out what
was the reason that the FUS wouldn't work with Windows 2000 type login
screen in Windows XP?

thanks,
Sam.

Sam,

You can either use the old W2K style log on style or the Welcome Screen,
period. You can't have both. FUS comes with the Welcome Screen. Make your
choice.

You are repeating what I already know. I understand my limited options
in MS. I just wanted to know if anybody here can make any sense out of
the limited options when it is quite easy to understand (by anyone who
has any basic knowledge of computer engineering and programming) that it
is quite easy to provide this feature not to mention the added security
it brings to hid the usernames from prying eyes(this could be subtle for
average joe).

Other than that:

If I wish to let them know my wishes, I will use this site. But if you
could give me a site where they justify withholding certain features,
that would be more relevant and revealing here.

Sam.
