Welcome Page - erroneous emails showing

About a week ago, my user account's Welcome Page started
displaying "1 unread mail message" for the email account
I have set up in Outlook...but there are no unread email
messages. This shows up even when booting up the machine
and Outlook isn't even open!

I've searched the knowledge base and have been racking my
brain for three days as to what is up with this.

I checked Outlook Express and deleted the welcome message
but my email account isn't even set up on OE so I don't
think that's it.

Any help would be appreciated...thanks.

Hi

You can download TweakUI from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp and when
installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go to
Logon>Unread Mail - disable it in the right hand pane.

Otherwise the Unread Mail can be disabled via the Registry - navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
email address], double click on 'MessageCount' - in the right hand pane -
and change the value to 0(Zero).

***If you do opt for the Registry please 'tweak', please backup the Registry
first. A very good program to do this - as well as being able to restore
it - is ERunt:

Is there any way to fix this without disabling it? I
don't want to disable the entire feature, I just want it
to display correctly.

Thanks.

Hi

Tweak UI edits the Registry to edit this function to either on or off - so
does the manual Registry. AFAIK, there is no way to 'correct' this function.
It is an on/off setting.

The feature is not built in to XP or OE but into the original Windows Messenger shipped with XP. It is no longer a feature of messenger either. To get the feature you need to install the MSN addin.
