Welcome logon switched to Classic - cannot switch back

Hello group,

I hope I'm posting in the right group. If not, please tell me what
group could help with my problem.

I'm using Windows XP Pro with service pack 1.

Have 1 administrator account and 3 limited user accounts.

Was fooling with customizing both the bootscreen (ntoskrnl.exe) and
the logon screen (logonui.exe).

Was also trying to get gpedit.msc to work, which it would not. Keeps
coming up with

snap-in failed to initialize

CLSID: { 8FC0B734-A0E1-11D1-A7D3-0000F87571E3}

Computer had been using the default WELCOME logon screen, but suddenly
switched to classic style and now can only log on under administrator
account.

If logged on and try to switch user, system reports locked (as if
Windows key plus L was pressed) and will only allow administrator to
log on.

I went back to the stock ntoskrnl.exe and logonui.exe files, but the
problem remains.

Can anyone help me get the Weclome logon screen back, so I can again
use the limited user accounts ?

Thanks for your help.

Henry,

Here is the link to help you get into grpedit.msc:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-

As for trying to get you old files back as they should be
you could run the System File checker, to repair them:

You can do this by running

Use the following procedure to correct Windows XP system
files, Click start adn type CMD, then:

SFC /SCANNOW

SFC = System File Checker. SFC will scan your system and
replace
missing or damaged XP system files with the correct
version.

Introduction to using scannow sfc (system file checker)

Hope this helps with some of your issues

Thank you for the reply, Mike. I had already checked the above link -
it was not the solution to the problem. I had also run the SFC, but it
also failed to resolve the problem.

However, I learned that the Install CD has an option to try to repair
a Windows installation, rather than erase it and put in a fresh one.

While I usually prefer to wipe clean and install fresh, I decided to
give the repair option a try and it worked dandy !

Now the GPEDIT is working and so is the WELCOME logon screen.

Thanks again for your help.
