Weird sound

O

Olivier

Dear All,

Glad to be back here, I am having this weird sound when I start and close
Windows XP and whenever there is a notification or an alert.

It seems that the Microsoft XP theme's sounds I am using have a problem, the
normal XP sounds have been replaced with this weird and disturbing sound.

Could you please help me?

Thank you in advance

Olivier

Control Panel>Sounds

Change the sounds played during a particular event to something else or turn
them off entirely.

Dear Malke,

Thank you for your reply. I have tried that but there is no change, the
weird sound still there. Thank you if you have another alternative.

You need to see if the sound is part of the XP theme or part of
another application. Try to set the "end XP" sound to "none" for a
test.

If the sound disappears, then you have applications that might be too
memory "hogging" to permit the sound to work well. This usually
happens with "on-board" sound devices such as AC'97, Realtek and
SoundMax

Sorry, can't help without being able to see/hear your computer. "Weird
sound" just doesn't cut it in regard to providing enough details. Have a
knowledgeable friend or local computer tech take a look.

Sorry I was unable to help you.

if we are talking about external speakers ,
I would suggest that you might remove the
jacks ( connectors ) and clean them with
denatured alcohol .
awhile back , I had a similar experience
and it worked for me .
please post back if it works for you .

Those sounds could be stored in.

C:\WINDOWS\Media

You could try playing the sounds, to see if normal sound playback
is also compromised. For example

Windows XP Startup.wav (424,644 bytes for my SP3)

Windows XP Shutdown.wav (282,608 bytes for my SP3)

GSpot lists the files as WAV files with -

22050Hz 706 kb/s tot (2 chnls)

so any program that plays WAV files should be
able to deal with them.

There are probably more keys in the registry than this, but these
are some examples.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\SystemExit
.Current %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Shutdown.wav
.Default %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Shutdown.wav

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\SystemStart
.Current %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Startup.wav
.Default %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Startup.wav

If you want other diagnostics, go to Start:Run and type "dxdiag".
Go to the Sound tab and test "DirectSound". Does it have
the problem as well ?

Has this ever worked properly?

When did you notice the change?

Have you done any malware scans? Try these:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these three free
malware detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/
AVG (AVG): http://free.avg.com/

The Windows Start and Exit sounds (and other sounds) play from
separate .wav files.

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices - click
the Sounds tab.

What does it say in the Sound Scheme window? Choose the Windows
Default scheme and save it.

Find Exit Windows and Start Window in the Program events box.
Highlight one and click the black > bottom to hear the sound.

In the Sounds window you should see (respectively):

Windows XP Shutdown.wav
Windows XP Startup.wav

Is it weird or does it sound right?

How does that work for you?

Please describe the sound. If you have a microphone, you may be hearing
feedback, which sounds like a high-pitched squeal at times. Some
speakers hum with a 60 hz hum when they get older, or damaged.

No, they don't. If there is a 60 Hz hum being heard, it is NOT due to the
speaker getting older or damaged.

Vague and weird descriptions of symptoms yield similar suggestions for
solutions.

You're absolutely right.

Whatever the cause, the OP's problem depends on the type of sound
emanating. If a hum, the OP can check for power supplies too close to
the speakers and the wiring, try a different set of powered speakers,
and try a different sound card.

:) One other person complained about a "strange loud noise".

Some X number of confusing posts later, it was determined that this
only happened when they restarted Windows. I just could not get them
to get into Control Panel to play the sounds to see if what they heard
matched the XP Startup sound. What is so hard about following
instructions?

Of course, it turned out later this was the proper Windows XP Startup
sound and the volume was much higher than needed and there were also
many other strange loud noises throughout the day!
