WinXP Boot up sound disappears

Roy

Hello group
I am having a weird experience with my PC in which during the boot up
the accompanying typical XP sound just vanish. This occured a few
days ago . I checked the sound volume and it was okey, I was perplexed
how this things happen and what is the main cause of such fault.
Now when I boot up my PC it just remain silent although others things
are doing fine..
Can somebody give me an idea what is going on?
My PC has a stable antivirus program( Kaspersky).
Another thing also the sound icon on the bottom tool bar just
vanished.
TIA
ROY

Is there normal audio playback for MediaPlayer, audio CD, DVD's, etc.?
Is there a warning icon in Device Manager for the sound, video and game
controllers? If no to the first and/or yes to the second, then the sound
drivers should be re-installed.

This may help. Go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices.
Check the "Place volumn icon in task bar". Hopefully it will
"stick" even after re-booting. If not there are other
procedures.

While in the "Sounds and Audio Devices", click the "Sounds" tab
and check out what sounds are set up for XP opening, etc. Check
everything here...all kinds of interesting stuff that you should
familiarize yourself with. Sound scheme...set it as "default"
and see what that does for you. This will re-set the default
sounds for different Windows events. Don't be scared to take the
? on the upper-right corner and place it over anything you have
questions about. That is how you learn.

Let us know how things work out. If I can't help, others with
more expertise will.

Another option he might consider is the lazy man's approach, and just use
System Restore to restore it to a restore point just before this happened.
(Of course, many changes he has made to his system since that time will be
lost or undone)

thanks for you input,
Yes there was a normal playback either with the video or audio in
windows media player, power DVD real media etc.
There was no warning icon in the device manager

Thanks ,
I am only familiar with the default sound emitted during boot up and
have not tried yet other varieties if there's any..
Anyway as I am not using my PC right now I will check that detail
later about that.
Earlier I checked the control panel and sounds and found out that the
sound icon box was checked.
I checked the volume control and everything was okay...

Sometimes you have to uncheck and apply, then recheck it. They get out of
sync sometimes.

Alas! when I opened my PC this afternoos the vanishing icon and mute
boot up of XP played his game again<sigh>.
When I clicked the control panel in category view then clicked in the
Sound Speech and Audio devices then selected the control panel icon
Sound and audio devices, then ticked volume, then device volume ,
selected or checked and either unchecked the box , then click apply
for every checking and unchecking ( in order to see which works), It
did not change anything, the sound icon was absent as well as the boot
up sound, but the sound was active in the audio and video application.
I am getting perplexed about this issue .....
Does anybody have this experienc and can possibly point me to the
right direction?
Thanks in Advance.

Well after some thought I found the solution to this pesky problem
that is by tweaking the registry. I have the professional registry
doctor installed in my unit. I run it to check for registry errors and
when the errors were removed after some back up I run the registry
defragment, rebooted my PC and sure is the Xp sound and the Volume
icon came back..
I tried rebooting a few times and there it is the desired fixtures
remains and my PC regained its former glory.<grin>.
Therefore I realize that the problem is not hardware or software
related but have something to do with registry..
Can somebody offer me an explanation how this is so?
Thank You!

Your use of the so called "registry doctor" is likely the source of your
problems. Read up at the link below.

Well that was contrary to my experience as the moment I installed it
some months ago it certainly sorted out problems whenever I lost
hope with other recommended tools. This may raise some eyebrows to
WinXP experts that eschew the use of such registry tools, but it works
with me....
In fact the issue with the disappearing sound icon and boot up sound
were just recent problems and I think it was sorted up yesterday
( already feeling hopeless) I run this registry doctor.
