Weird problem with Hibernation!

When I attempt to put my computer in Hibernation by selecting from the
Start menu, it doesn't do anything. HOWEVER, if I attempt to shutdown
and the shutdown is aborted by some application that prompts to save a
file, I can then hibernate with no problem. For example, if notepad is
opening and the file has not yet been saved, when I shut down, I will
be given the option to "Cancel". If I do that, hibernation works fine
- but if I don't first attempt a shutdown, it fails. Of course this
doesn't help me much since the point of hibernating is not to close
half my apps first!

I tried unchecking hibernation under "power options", rebooting, and
re-enabling so a new hiberfil.sys file is created, but same thing. At
this point, I'm at a loss!!

Any ideas?

You can make a shortcut on your desktop to hibernate by right clicking on
the desktop select New, shortcut, Browse to C:\Windows \system32\rundll32.exe
and select it. In the wizard text box add this line to the end after .exe
powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Hibernate (a space follows .exe) finish the
wizard and you have a one-click hibernate button on the desktop.
You can copy paste this line:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Hibernate

Unfortunately, the same thing happens... nothing! But as I described
above, let's say I only have "notepad.exe" opened with some unsaved
text. Hibernation won't work right away, but if I attempt to shutdown,
then click cancel to abort the shutdiwn (because notepad tells me
there is unsaved text), I can hibernate without a problem.

Something, likely "3rd party software" is interfering with the process
of Hibernation, BUT does comply with the Shutdown command. Please look
in Task Manager, and see what processes are running at the time the
Hibernate command is issued that are NOT running immediately after you
"cancel" the shutdown. One of the "missing" processes, is the one that
is "tossing off" the initial Hibernation command. Selectively KILL the
processes one by one trying the Hibernate command after each KILL, till
you ID the culprit.
