Basic problem - I can ping ip addresses, but not hostnames
and web/email don't work (i.e. act is if network cable is
unplugged).
Network (home) - SBC/Yahoo DSL to SpeedStream DSL router
to SMC 7004VBR router which supports two computers, one of
which works fine (both have XP Home Edition).
Apparent cause of problem - My son accidentally disabled
the LAN connection. SBC Connection Manager (a program
provided by SBC) was running and offered to rollback
the "Network Settings" to April 2003 version to fix the
problem. He clicked OK. Once that happened, a perfectly
functioning computer could no longer get anything useful
from the internet.
More details - Under TCP/IP Properties, if I configure for
everything automatic, I can't ping anything, including the
router the PC is directly connected to. If I, instead,
configure with a static IP on the router's subnet, I can
ping the router, SBC's DNS server and other IP addresses.
However I can't ping, for example, www.yahoo.com ("ping
request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Please check
the name and try again.") Kinda seems like DNS is broken,
but I'm guessing it is something more fundamental. I also
can't use IE to manage the router as IE thinks it is
working offline.
Result if ipconfig command looks just like the computer
that is working normally (connected to the same router).
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I might be able
to do to fix this problem or even what SBC Connection
Manager might have done to cause this behavior (I tried
SBC support but they declined to address any network
configuration issues I might be having with my computer)
Any help would be greatly appreciated as the only next
step I can think of is to reinstall XP.
Thanks in advance,
Mark
