weird network problem - nothing outside mask gets out

Hello,

I have a strange problem with my pc's network connection. About three times a day I
have to disable and re-enable my network adapter to get connectivity to internet back :-
( I have a router, switch and a few PCs in network, everything is working fine, except
my pc.

Time to time (about three times a day) I lose connection to the internet, but local area
network is working normally, I can ping (local IPs), browse shares, etc, but I cannot get
to other IPs over my netmask (internet), so I have to disable my ethernet adapter and
re-enable it, which solves the problem for a few hours. I have tried to change the NIC
adatper, but it was for nothing, connection is still falling :-( I'm experiencing this
problem for a month or so, it worked fine before, but something must have changed or
broken down... Event viewer is empty.

Any ideas what it can be? Before I will reinstall windows, I'd like to know if some of
clever guys here don't know what it can be ;-)

We need more details on your Internet service (DSL, cable or satelite)
and type of network (wired or wireless.) Also, if you are using
wireless networking, it would help to know which level (802.11a, 11b,
11g or Draft 11n.)

General suggestions:

1) Try to check firewall software. Test by disabling it.
2) Notice when this occurs. If happens after "hibernation" then look
at possible solution for hibernation problems.
3) Check and install any updated network adapter drivers.
4) Scan PC for possible virus with an updated anti-virus system (not
oon-line with the Internet at the same time.)
5) Scan for possible spyware/malware infestation (again while not
connected to the Internet.)
6) If network is a "wired" network, try replacing the cable.
7) Check with the router status logs and check with the router's
manufacturer's support web site.
8) Locate "winsockxpfix.exe" on the Internet. This tool will reset
the TCP/IP network protocol stack back to Microsoft's defaults.

Hi, thanks for the hints, except winsock thing I have tested, but there's nothing I havent


It's a normal (cable) network, connected using 5e cables and a gigabit 3com switch.
Internet service is adsl, router is running redhat linux, but router or my isp has nothing
to do with it, it's an isolated problem of my PC, other PCs are working. I even see the
router (it's internal IP) and the router see me, but I cannot get over.

Spybot and NOD32 may not catch all possible spywares. You should/need
to also run other utilities in order to catch almost all possible
spywares. Several other utilities I like: Ad Aware SE, Spyware
Terminator and AVG Anti-Spyware Free.

I have also seen similar problems where the router device (consumer
device) could not "hold" the Internet IP address successfully. Turned
out to be a firmware problem that the device's manufacturer was
aware. Firmware update fixed this. I would check the RedHat settings.

Well done! This thing did the job Thank you for your kind help. Strange that it got
damaged even when I'm pretty sure I had never a virus attack or spyware... But I'm
glad it works now, you saved me from reinstalling ;-)
