I've noticed that I have the following folders under c:\

09/20/2003 12:42 PM <DIR> 069710e6a964a850e206c7117cbf59
10/16/2003 01:20 PM <DIR> 27fba711606c8c2873d5be03e659b1b4
08/18/2003 11:14 AM <DIR> 48be8b028867cadf9d
05/01/2003 11:48 PM <DIR> 5c4b9011acb9b
05/15/2004 10:00 PM <DIR> 827a2cf6357d566e090aa6
12/19/2003 11:35 PM <DIR> 98ba8912bc0b6aab4c
11/05/2003 09:19 PM <DIR> bdd0bfc3133aa140fe5cc2f6bde6
09/29/2003 06:05 PM <DIR> cff6b3195715eec3a86624d5c0b44f49
06/17/2004 02:53 PM <DIR> e51273f061b52fd2a348291f8b70

Of these nine folders, the following contain three folders named "common"
"sp1" and "sp2".

48be8b028867cadf9d
5c4b9011acb9b
827a2cf6357d566e090aa6
069710e6a964a850e206c7117cbf59
bdd0bfc3133aa140fe5cc2f6bde6
cff6b3195715eec3a86624d5c0b44f49

And these folders contain a folder called "update".

98ba8912bc0b6aab4c
e51273f061b52fd2a348291f8b70

And this one contains a folder called "sp2".

27fba711606c8c2873d5be03e659b1b4

For the sake of brevity, I don't want to describe everthing in these
folders, but in alot of
them, I noticed a file called "Microsoft Service Pack". What are these
folders and files?
Can I just get rid of some of them? Some of them take up MEGS of disk space,
and if they
are obsolete, I'd like to get rid of them. Their creation dates are listed
at the top.

Leftovers from Windows Updates, as long as they are fully installed you can

You can safely delete the folders. They are leftovers from installing

Can I just get rid of some of them? Some of them take up MEGS of disk
space,

not MEGS! however will you cope with that sort of hard disk usage!

delete them.

Thanks. I have another question. Under C:\Documents and Settings I have the
following directories.
The ******** part is my service tag. I blocked it out, because I wasn't sure
if it's safe to
publish it.

Directory of C:\Documents and Settings

My concern here is with the directories which have "Administrator" in their
filename. Notice
the dates on these directories. I got my computer on 02/12/02. On 01/03/04,
I accidently
password locked myself out of my own laptop and I had to call Dell to get
back in. Notice that
some of these dirctories are dated January 3, 2004. Others are dated 2002,
and others around
2004. What are these directories? Do I need them all? Can I delete some of
them?

I've had the directories named "Patrick D. Rockwell" and "PATRICK~1~ROC"
ever since I
first logged onto my laptop, but the date on "Patrick D. Rockwell" seems
recent. Today's date
infact. Do I need them both?

You need
06/23/2004 07:41 PM <DIR> All Users
02/12/2002 09:43 PM <DIR> Default User
06/29/2004 12:14 PM <DIR> LocalService
06/29/2004 12:14 PM <DIR> NetworkService
in any case. For the "Administrator" and "Patrick Rockwell" folders:
do this: log on as "Patrick Rockwell" and open a DOS box. Type
SET
here and press ENTER. Check the setting for "Userprofile". This is the
profile folder that is actually in use. The other "Patrick" folder is
obsolete.
Log on as the Administrator and do the same to find out which of the
"Administrator" folders you need.
