Weird Annoyance

Every time a client starts his Windows XP Home PC, it starts but stops with
only the desktop wallpaper showing. If he presses CTRL-ALT-DEL, all the
desktop icons, task bar, etc appear. It not profile specific as it happened
with a newly create user.

Any ideas?

Do you happen to be running OpenAFS? We have a problem when openafs along
with a certain kerberos package is installed. I believe it is caused in part
by a loopback adapter that is installed by default with the OpenAFS
installer.

Perhaps your problem is similar if you are using a loopback adapter?

Also you might want to check your event log to see if there is a service or
something that isn't starting or has an error associated with it.

Some program or service is stalling when it tries to start, and it's just
hanging there. I've seen it happen with any number if things, including
corrupted registry entries, spyware, and even good programs gone bad.

Go to MSCONFIG and start disabling things and re-enabling to see if you can
narrow down what's hanging.
