the day has appeared with my date and time increasing the number of lines on
the toolbar. how do I eliminate and get it back toa single line?

You or someone else dragged the toolbar to a larger height.
Simply place the curser at the top of the toolbar until you see the up and
down arrow.
Then left click and lower the bar as desired.
You may need to unlock the bar by right clicking and clicking as
appropriate.
Lock when finished to help prevent inadvertent changes.

Right-click on the Taskbar and select "Unlock the Taskbar". Hover you mouse
over the top portion of the Taskbar until you see an Up and Down Arrow mouse
icon and then click and drag the Taskbar down to the size your requires. The
Lock the Taskbar if you wish.
