Is there anywhere I can set an option to stop the very
annoying habit of a website I am viewing trying to close
the window I am using to view it?

This is a very respectable UK broadsheet newspaper site
which persists in this behaviour.

The pop up requiring a "yes" or "no" answer to the web
site's attempt to close appears and works when I
click "no", but the wretched site tries again in a couple
of minutes or so.

Roger,
That's a problem with the code on the web page/site.
Apparently they have a javascript somewhere on the page to
close the window, which is usually a link you must click
(such as "close"). It would appear that either it's been
written to close the window on mouseover or perhaps they
have it set to close after a delay, for example,30 seconds.
But it's a coding error for sure on the web page. Your
browser is behaving as it should;, it won't allow the
primary window to be closed via code. If there is more
than 1 window open, the code will be allowed to close the
window without prompting you. (Many popups have a "close"
link in the window that works this way.) If you want, post
the URL and I'll take a look at the source code, and if I
find the error I'll see if there's a link to notify the
webmaster of the site.

You may have some spyware/malware installed. First, be sure your
computer is clean by removing spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www. security.kolla.de and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
you have a current (version no later than 2002) antivirus program
running with updated definitions. If the problem still persists, either
contact the webmaster of the site or post the url for the site here so
other people can check it out for you.
